New York Paycheck Calculator (2026)

New York withholds federal income tax and FICA like everywhere else, then adds a progressive state income tax from 4% to 10.9%. If you live in New York City, an additional city resident tax comes out on top of that. The calculator below lets you toggle NYC residency so your estimate matches your actual situation.

How New York withholding works

New York State income tax

New York's state income tax is progressive, starting at 4% and rising to 10.9% for the highest earners. As with all bracketed taxes, each portion of your income is taxed at its own band's rate, so your effective rate is lower than your top marginal rate.

New York City resident tax

If you are a New York City resident, the city levies its own income tax (roughly 3.0%–3.9%) on top of state tax, and it applies based on where you live rather than where you work. Use the NYC checkbox in the calculator to include it. Yonkers also has a resident surcharge, which the statewide brackets here do not separately model.

Rates & brackets

New York's 2026 income tax rates

New York taxes income in graduated brackets. Only the income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate. Here is the 2026 schedule for a single filer and for married filing jointly:
