California Paycheck Calculator (2026)
California has one of the most layered withholding pictures in the country: federal income tax and FICA, then a progressive state income tax that runs from 1% to 12.3%, plus State Disability Insurance (SDI) that is withheld on all of your wages. Punch in your gross pay and the calculator sorts out what actually lands in your account.

How California withholding works
How California state income tax works
California uses nine progressive brackets, from 1% on the first few thousand dollars of taxable income up to 12.3% on very high earners (a 1% mental-health surcharge applies above $1 million). Because the brackets are progressive, only the income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate. Your top rate is not applied to your whole salary.
California SDI: the extra line most calculators miss
On top of income tax, California withholds State Disability Insurance (SDI) on your wages. As of recent years the wage ceiling was removed, so SDI applies to every dollar of your earnings rather than only the first portion. It is a small percentage but it is mandatory, and leaving it out is the most common reason a California take-home estimate comes out too high.

California's 2026 income tax rates
California taxes income in graduated brackets. Only the income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate. Here is the 2026 schedule for a single filer and for married filing jointly:
| Single: taxable income | Rate | Married filing jointly: taxable income |
|---|---|---|
| $0 – $11,079 | 1% | $0 – $22,158 |
| $11,079 – $26,264 | 2% | $22,158 – $52,528 |
| $26,264 – $41,452 | 4% | $52,528 – $82,904 |
| $41,452 – $57,542 | 6% | $82,904 – $115,084 |
| $57,542 – $72,724 | 8% | $115,084 – $145,448 |
| $72,724 – $371,479 | 9.3% | $145,448 – $742,958 |
| $371,479 – $445,771 | 10.3% | $742,958 – $891,542 |
| $445,771 – $742,953 | 11.3% | $891,542 – $1,485,906 |
| $742,953 and up | 12.3% | $1,485,906 and up |
Standard deduction applied: $5,706 (single), $11,412 (married filing jointly). Brackets apply to income after this deduction.

Common questions
California Paycheck Calculator: common questions
- What gets withheld from a California paycheck?
- Five things for most workers: federal income tax, Social Security at 6.2%, Medicare at 1.45%, California state income tax (1%–12.3% progressive), and California SDI on all wages. Your gross pay, filing status, and W-4 set the exact total, which the calculator breaks down for you.
- Does California have state disability insurance (SDI)?
- Yes. California withholds SDI from employee wages, and the taxable wage ceiling was removed, so it now applies to your full earnings. It funds State Disability Insurance and Paid Family Leave benefits.
- What is California's top income tax rate?
- California's top marginal rate is 12.3%, plus an additional 1% mental-health services tax on taxable income over $1 million. Only income within the top bracket is taxed at that rate.
