2026 tax year · take-home pay

Maine Paycheck Calculator (2026)

Maine uses a three-bracket progressive income tax ranging from 5.80% at the bottom to 7.15% at the top, applied after a $15,700 standard deduction for single filers. The bottom rate of 5.80% is one of the higher entry points among states with progressive systems, meaning even lower-income Maine workers face a meaningful state income-tax rate.

How Maine withholding works

Maine's three progressive brackets

Maine's income tax starts at 5.80% on the first taxable dollars above the deduction, steps up to a middle rate, and tops out at 7.15% on the highest earners. The $15,700 standard deduction (single) comes off first. Because the bottom bracket already starts at 5.80%, Maine workers face a relatively steep effective state rate even at lower income levels.

No local income taxes in Maine

Maine municipalities do not impose their own income or wage taxes, which simplifies paycheck withholding compared to states like Maryland or Indiana. State income tax is the only income-tax line above FICA and federal withholding. Pre-tax 401(k) and health contributions reduce Maine taxable wages and are particularly valuable given the 5.80%+ rate that starts at the bottom bracket.

Rates & brackets

Maine's 2026 income tax rates

Maine taxes income in graduated brackets. Only the income inside each band is taxed at that band's rate. Here is the 2026 schedule for a single filer and for married filing jointly:

How the calculator withholds: Maine's revised 2026 withholding tables (August 2026) subtract $5,300 per allowance (one if single, two if married or head of household) and a withholding standard deduction of $12,850 single or $28,550 married that phases out between $102,250 and $177,250 of wages ($204,550 to $354,550 married), then add a 2% surcharge above $1 million ($1.5 million married). Heads of household use the single rates.
